Mazda MX-5 Miata
sun visors

Miata with visors If you are tall enough, you have propably noticed that Miata sun visors limit your visibility to the traffic lights. You have to bend your head to see the lights. And since the windscreen is not very high, you have propably never used the visors as sun shades. What can you say - they are pretty useless. So, why not to remove them and make your life a bit easier in traffic lights!
Visor plate hole The visors are easy to remove. Open the two screws in the plastic plate, and pull the visor and the plate out. Of course, we do not want the place where the visor was look bad. Because of this, we have to find a nice-looking way to fill the hole in the liner...

You can find new aftermarket plates without visor holes. They look nice but are pretty expensive - after all they are nothing but a piece of plastic.
Visor and plate apart I pulled the visors apart from the plate and decided to find a way to cover the visor holes in a way that allows putting the visors back later if I find a use for them.

Please notice that you have to use some power when pulling the visor apart from the plate. Be careful not to break the visors!
Plug It was surprisingly difficult to find black plastic plugs that fit in the visor plate holes. I searched in Home Depot, Walmart, Radio Shack, Fry's... Finally, in a small hardware store, Turner Hardware Dallas, I found what I had been looking for! The price was $0.25 - significantly less than new aftermarket visor plates.
Screw holes The hole in Miata visor plate is slanting a bit. Because of this, the Turner plugs had to be slightly modified before they fit perfectly. I cut the plug a bit shorter. After all, it does not matter how long foot there is in the plug.
Screw hole close-up Side-cutting pliers are a good tool in modifying the plugs.
Screw hole close-up As noticed earlier, I wanted to have the possibility to put the visors back later, if I find a use for them. Because of this, I wanted to glue the plugs with something which keeps them well in place, but on the other hand allows removing them if needed. Silicone is the perfect "glue" for this kind of work.
Screw hole close-up I put a little bit of silicone to the plugs and placed them to the holes. And visor plugs without visors were ready!
Miata without Now you can put the plugs back to your Miata, and there will be no more problems in seeing the traffic lights!
