Mazda MX-5 Miata baby tooth removal
|
|
Miatas have tiedown hooks. These have been used to fix them during transportation. According to the manual, tiedown hooks should not be used for towing. This makes them pretty much useless. Because of this, Miata enthusiasts call them baby teeth.

Baby teeth are fixed with three bolts. In my 2000 Special Edition, the screws were easy to see but very difficult to reach. There was space for tools or hands, but not for tools and hands. Because of this, be prepared for some bruises when removing the teeth.

The teeth look like this. The two frontmost bolts can be reached from the front, but the thrid one is too far away for this. I put my hand from front to the back - this is where you get the bruises - and loosened the screw with a wrench. Then I found a hole under the car where reached the screw with a screwdriver-like ratchet wrench.

To remove the baby teeth, you will need a 14 mm wrench. You can find a screwdriver-like ratchet wrench and a flash light useful too.

It makes sense to remove the tiedown hooks. Your Miata looks so much better without baby teeth.
